Chile’s former dictator Augusto Pinochet today sits in custody in a London hospital after he was arrested on Saturday by British authorities and charged with the crimes of genocide and terrorism. He awaits possible extradition to Spain to stand trial for the disappearance and death of scores of Spanish citizens, as well as people of various nationalities.

Today we bring you a segment of an interview that Democracy Now! aired about one month ago with Joan Jara, widow of Chilean protest singer Victor Jara, on the day of the 25th anniversary of his death. Victor Jara was tortured and killed on September 16, 1973, a few days after a CIA-backed coup put Pinochet in power.
