Hi there,

Today is the first of two Public Media Giving Days, a time to celebrate what public and independent media gives to you by giving back. If you think Democracy Now!’s reporting is a critical line of defense against war, climate catastrophe and authoritarianism, please make your donation of $10 or more right now. In honor of Public Media Giving Days, a generous donor will TRIPLE your donation, which means it’ll go 3x as far to support our independent journalism. Democracy Now! is funded by you, and that’s why we’re counting on your donation to keep us going strong. Please give today. Every dollar makes a difference—in fact, gets tripled! Thank you so much.

In New York around ten thousand gathered to march from Union Square park to Times Square yesterday, calling for an end to the military attacks on Afghanistan. A broad New York anti-war coalition called the demonstration several weeks ago in anticipation of US retaliation against the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. But yesterday morning, after the announcement that the US and Britain had begun attacks on targets in Afghanistan, the demonstration took on a new urgency. Carrying signs with messages like “Justice not vengeance” and “No retaliation”the demonstrators somberly chanted and sang as they marched uptown. Demonstrators stood in the cold air in the center of Times Square to hear the words of Nobel Peace laureates and peace activists. We go now to the words of Mairead McGuire, a Nobel Peace Prize winner from Northern Ireland, and Adolfo Perez Esquival, a Nobel Peace Prize winner fromArgentina.

Tape:

  • Mairead McGuire, Nobel Peace Prize winner from Northern Ireland.
  • Adolfo Perez Esquival, Nobel Peace Prize winner from Argentina.
