At a time when the gap between Israelis and Palestinians seems most unbridgeable, 30 year old Israeli peace activistNeta Golan has put her life on the line on behalf of the Palestinian people. She is the founder of the grassrootsInternational Solidarity Movement, a group that brings international activists to the occupied territories and helpsthem become involved in direct action to protest the occupation of Palestine. Since the start of the Intifada, shehas served as a human shield, lay down in front of tanks, and removed roadblocks. According to Golan, her presence asan Israeli standing alongside Palestinians serves as a deterrent to the violence often employed by the Israeli army. She has been arrested 10 times, and last summer had her arm broken by Israeli security forces during a protest in theWest Bank.
