A group of Democratic lawmakers held a news conference Tuesday amid the outrage over anti-Muslim attacks by Congressmember Lauren Boebert and other Republicans against Congressmember Ilhan Omar. Omar again called on Republican leadership to hold party members accountable for their dangerous rhetoric.

Rep. Ilhan Omar: “The truth is, is that Islamophobia pervades our culture, our politics and even policy decisions. Cable news hosts, leading politicians in the Republican Party routinely spout hateful rhetoric about a religion that includes a diverse group, more than a billion peaceful worshipers around the world.”

Congressmember Omar also played a threatening, profanity-laden voicemail she received this week.

Voicemail recording: “You will not live much longer, bitch. I can almost guarantee you that.”

The call came after Boebert refused to apologize to Omar Monday for making Islamophobic statements including calling her a member of the “jihad squad.” In 2018, Ilhan Omar became the first Somali American and one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress.
