Public Health Icon Dr. Paul Farmer, 62, Dies Unexpectedly in Rwanda

Web ExclusiveFebruary 21, 2022

Dr. Paul Farmer has died unexpectedly at the age of 62 in Rwanda. He was a world-renowned infectious disease doctor and medical anthropologist. He co-founded the group Partners in Health in 1987 to deliver healthcare to people in Haiti. In 2014, Partners in Health was one of the first organizations to respond to the Ebola crisis in West Africa.

In a statement, Partners In Health CEO Dr. Sheila Davis said, “Paul Farmer’s loss is devastating, but his vision for the world will live on through Partners in Health. Paul taught all those around him the power of accompaniment, love for one another, and solidarity.”

Dr. Paul Farmer was interviewed a number of times on Democracy Now! most recently in 2020:
